Referencing: Xamk instructions: Use of AI in academic writing

This page provides instructions on how source references must be marked in body text and how a list of references is created in accordance with Xamk writing guidelines

General AI guidelines

According to Xamk's Artificial Intelligence guidelines (2024) available on Lux intranet,

The use of AI-generated text as part of written work is not allowed without appropriate, verified references to the original sources. Artificial intelligence may not be used to produce the final version of a written assignment. AI-generated text may not be presented as written by the student themselves. AI-generated text is not to be referenced directly nor directly quoted. It can be used if it is adapted, using one’s own words and, as mentioned above, with appropriate references.

If AI is used in producing text, this must be clearly stated, for example, as illustrated by Arene (2023, Appendix 1):

In Section 2.1 of this document, the authors used AI tool ChatGPT when describing the possibilities of the platform economy. The authors have reviewed and edited the content generated by the AI tool and take full responsibility for the accuracy of presented information.

In long documents, the use of AI must be stated in each section that presents content produced with the help of AI, for example in this manner:

In this section, AI model [insert here the name and version of the model] was used as a support when producing content. The prompts that the tool was given related to [describe here the key content of prompts].

In shorter texts, it will suffice that the use of AI is stated at the beginning of the text, for example in this manner:

In this document, AI model [insert here the name and version of the model] was used as a support when producing content. The prompts that the tool was given related to [describe here the key content of prompts].

In figures, the use of AI must be stated in the caption, for example in this manner:

Figure 1. Caption text (the figure was created by AI model [insert here the name and version of the model])

Artificial intelligence is not listed as a source in the list of references as it does not possess copyright to the content it creates.
